The psychotherapy process is highly individualized. We have to start from where we are, and begin to look at things from different angles, in order to change our understanding and illuminate choices that we did not realize we had. I have had the pleasure of working with many people over many years from whom I have learned perhaps as much as they have. As the Buddha said, “the teacher is the student and the student the teacher.” It is possible to change, and to change dramatically. To let go of the patterns and beliefs that are not working for us and to learn a different way of understanding things, of reacting to people and events, and to change the soundtrack of our mind to be less worrisome, less angry, less regretful. It takes time and it takes effort. But it is enormously rewarding. In the words of a client of mine several years after she completed her work with me – “I am overwhelmed with gratitude.” And hearing this I was overwhelmed with joy. It is important to have a therapist with who you have “chemistry.” The interaction has to feel right. You should leave feeling better, or if not necessarily better right away at least a bit more hopeful, carrying with you something to contemplate.
Adults, Couples, Parents
I work with adults of all ages, and especially well with young adults who are finding their way. With couples it is very helpful to have a person to help each of you to hear what the other is trying to say, and to better express what you are feeling. I don’t do therapy directly with children, as it is a very different process and skill, but rather work with parents to help them understand and help their child.
